The Aix-Marseille University (AMU), established on January 1, 2012, can justifiably declare that it managed to achieve its goal: to unite the three higher educational institutions of the region into a large world-class university. The AMU is a basis for intense research, the university is actively implementing partnership programs across the globe, while maintaining strong territorial relations and integration. It is among the top French universities in the Shanghai ranking. AMU is a multidisciplinary educational institution, the structure of which is built around five subject areas, comprising 18 structural divisions (faculties, schools, institutes), and one multidisciplinary sector (which includes the ESPE and the IUT):
  •        Art, Literature, Foreign Languages ​​and Humanities
  •        Law and Political Sciences
  •        Economics and Management
  •        Health
  •        Science and Technology.
In terms of research and innovation, AMU has developed a strategy corresponding the scale of the university in connection with the major research organizations (CNRS, Inserm, IRD, CEA…). Activities in this area are based on numerous divisions and research federations, as well as on five intersectoral and interdisciplinary research domains:
  •        Energy;
  •        Environment;
  •        Humanities
  •        Health and Life Science
  •        Science and Advanced Technologies.
Among other things, the University has confirmed its reputation in the field of scientific research by a series of victories in project competitions, both within the country (labex, equipex, Instituts convergences, RHU, EUR, etc.), and within the European Union. An example is the H2020 program, under which AMU is the third French organization to receive a grant. The A*Midex project, implemented by the University of Aix-Marseille together with its partners (AMU, CNRS, Inserm, IRD, CEA, Directorate of State Marseille Hospitals, Aix-en-Provence Institute for Political Studies and Marseille Central School). The project was launched in 2012, and since 2016 it has been carried out on a regular basis. It ensured excellent dynamics on five priority topics and strategic goals that were identified in 2012:
  •        the highest quality of education and research
  •        partnership with representatives of socio-economic circles
  •        globalization of the areas of excellence of the university
  •        ambitious human resources policy
  •        attractiveness of the institution.
In 2019, AMU created its first 13 interdisciplinary institutes operating under the postgraduate program. These programs include research and education in the domains of specialty of the University of Aix-Marseille that made is known all around the globe.
