The course provides an extensive introduction into heterocyclic chemistry. Special emphasis is given to the core heterocyclic systems, such as 5-membered heterocycles (pyrrole, furane. thiophene), indole, pyridine, quinoline and isoquinoline. For each type of heterocycles, electronic structure, methods for the ring synthesis; chemical properties and characteristic reactions will be discussed. The concept of heteroaromaticity, general methods for ring synthesis (by a number of cyclisation and cycloadditon reactions) as well as different systems for nomenclature will be presented. The course aim is to give a fundamental theoretical understanding of heterocyclic chemistry, including alternative general methods for ring construction and the application of such methods for the preparation of specific groups of heterocyclic systems. The students will get conversant with peculiar properties and reactions for the most important heterocyclic compounds as well as different systems of nomenclature for heterocycles.
